Science fiction is a genre of speculative fiction which typically deals with imaginative and futuristic concepts such as advanced science and technology, space exploration, time travel and parallel universes.
Science fiction gained popularity in the 1950s because developments in technology, such as nuclear energy and space exploration, coupled with the end of World War II, ignited the public's imagination surrounding ideas of space, dystopia, alternate futures, and militarization.
Futurism is very prominent in science fiction films. Sci-Fi envisions alternative worlds with advanced technology to give a perspective of what life will eventually look like.
Space travel and exploration is another key aspect of Sci-Fi films. Space is something we have yet to fully explore or understand, Sci-Fi films give a unique take on what is really going on above us.
CGI is commonly used in Sci-Fi to visualize unique types of technology and aircraft. An example is from Star Wars: CGI was used to create star cursers, the millennium falcon and death star.
Sound is another key aspect of Science fiction. Synthesizers are almost always used in Sci-Fi films because they can produce otherworldly sounds. An example is the sound used in interstellar during the alter dimension scenes, these sounds can be replicated by anything naturally.
Marketing:
One writer-conducted market survey found that science fiction readers account for about 20% of the US population, are wealthier than the average, are about 57 percent male and tend to reduce their reading volume between the ages of 45-65. Also—no surprise—SF readers are people who read a lot. These films usually feature a bold futuristic or scientific theme grabbing the viewers attention.
